Folds out concertina-style with 13 double-page woodblock prints (12 erotic and 1 of flowers). White margins: 31cm x 23.5cm. Tall 8vo (23.5cm x 15.5cm). Light marking to upper cover, and line of light browning on rear cover. Internally, light foxing browning to rear of plates, but plates themselves generally very clean. No obvious tears or marks. A lovely example of a late 19th century Japanese’pillow book’, with 13 double page woodblock prints, 12 of which are of a highly charged erotic nature. Each shows the Prince Meiji in his boudoir with his lovers. Such books were designed originally as marital aids for Japanese couples, but in the late 19th century were also produced as curiosities for tourists.
