SET OF 20 ORIGINAL YOSHITOSHI JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS; BIOGRAPHIES OF MODERN HEROES (Kinsei Kyogiden). FORMAT: Oban Tate-e (13.25 x 9.5). SERIES: Biographies of Modern Heroes (Kinsei Kyogiden). CONDITION: Minor marks and flaws but generally fine impression and colour and good condition; 1 print is backed and 1 is creased. Kinsei Kyogiden; a series of 36 Complete Stories (prints), is one of Yoshitoshi’s earliest series. This series shows leading figures in a violent feud between two gambling rings in Shimôsa province (now part of Chiba prefecture) in 1849, led by Iioka Sukegorô and Hanzô. These anti-establishment figures were heroic figures in the popular culture of the time. As with many of Yoshitoshi’s prints in the violent and unsettled times of the mid to late 1860s, the series is full of blood and gore. Offered here from my personal 30 year collection is a portfolio of 20 of the 36 Yoshitoshi woodblock prints from the “Heroes” series. They have been kept protected in the portfolio and loved for many years. These prints would make a serious and amazing gift for a woodblock or Yoshitoshi print collector.
