Original Japanese Woodblock Print Calm At Ksaki By Kawase Hasui 1943

This is an original Japanese Showa 18 c. (wood block print) titled Calm at Kisaki by artist Kawase Hasui (1883 – 1943). The artist’s seal and signature is present in the bottom right corner of the image (see picture 4). While the date on the left margin states “Showa 18th year” (1943) and above is the title, Clam at Kisak i. In the lower left hand corner is the 7 mm Watanabe publishers seal (see pictures 7 & 8). The print depicts a boat slowly sailing along a placid lake (lake Kisaki) with forested cliffs looming all around. This print is “oban” sized and measures roughly 15 1/4″ x 10 1/4″ (39 / 26 cm) including the margins. In very fine condition with deep rich colors. The date of this print as around 1937. It is entitled: “Calm Wind”, and it titled on the lower left corner under the print. It is signed: Hiroshi Yoshida in the lower right corner below the print. The title and signature are faded, so I cannot tell if it is pencil signed or in the print. There is an embossed seal below the signature. The print is in good condition. It has faded and the paper has darkened in the margins. Some of the margins have been trimmed, and are slightly uneven. There is some rippling of the paper, and some light creasing. There are two pin sized holes on the edge of the left margin. I have not tried to clean or restore this image. Paper measures: 15 5/8″ tall by 10 1/2″ wide. Print Size: 12″ tall by 9″ wide. Paper size is 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches and image measures 12 x 9 inches. Print is not laid down. This appears to be a first edition from 1937 with pencil signature and embossed seal below signature. Has signature and red seal at bottom right of image. Left margin has Jizuri seal, date of 1937, and title “Calm Wind”. Print is in very good condition with light fading.
