This is an antique Japanese Woodblock Print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798 – 1861) depicting the Defeat of the Evil Nine-tailed Fox on Nasu Moor in the Shimotsuke Province. This Wood Block print is a Triptych with three separate wood block prints forming one picture. The woodblock print appears old, and was folded horizontally across all three woodblock prints prior to being framed. Each pieces has a fold mark horizontally, shown in close up in the last picture, pointed out by red arrows. This woodblock Tryptych is framed in a nice solid metal frame, with protective glass cover. The frame measures 36″ by 20″. The three woodblock prints alone measure 29 1/2″ by 14″. Was one of the last great masters of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa School. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. Most of the items I sell are estate finds, and are presented to you in, as is, as found condition.
