Utagawa Yoshitora Japanese Woodblock Print Chushingura 47 Ronin Samurai 1866 14. This is an antique Utagawa Yoshitora Japanese woodblock original print (not a copy) that measures 14 1/2″ x 9 3/4″. This is a Chushingura (47 Ronin) Samurai theme print. The artist Utagawa Yoshitora was the oldest student of Kuniyoshi and worked 1850′s- 1870′s. This print is dated to Year of the Tiger (1866). The print has age related issues… Discoloration, small holes, stains and creases to the thin paper. I have photographed the back side for your examination. The image is one in a series that illustrates the true story of the 47 Ronin / Faithful Samurai warriors of 1700′s Japan. The Samurai are in scenes defending their dead Master’s honor. Yoshitora is a famous Ukiyoe illustrator born in Edo (modern Tokyo). This print presents in vertical direction. My photos are of the actual item you are getting. Japanese Woodblock Print, Utagawa Yoshitora. These are reprinted Ukiyoe prints by Utagawa Yoshitora, a popular Ukiyoe artist active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period (mid to late 19th century). This Ukiyoe depicts the Mongolian invasion described by Nichiren Shonin, and the one from that period is in the collection of the British Museum in London. Although small, the print is delicate and beautifully printed with great attention to detail. Some foxing and staining, creases, edge wear etc. The two prints are laminated.
