Visible area of the image excluding the matting/border: 14.35 inch x 9.75 inch approx. The print was only recently removed from the frame. Appears that the Japanese framer mounted / pasted the print onto the back matting and sealed the sides. Print has likely been trimmed. Toning / tanning to the print and to the matting. No noticeable foxing spots. Pictures provided were taken under indoor artificial lighting AND outdoor under natural sunlight. Moisture stain visible on front matting lower right hand corner. What a fantastic find for the Collector. A wonderful gift idea. From the Collection of a Bethany Beach, Delaware Collector. While later woodblocks by this Master can be easily found via the internet. The ones that have his signature are getting harder and harder to find. Done in his lifetime. Child and Bird by Kaoru Kawano. Vintage modernism beautiful Japanese print by Kaoru Kawano, featuring the image of a girl all in red, holding a white bird on a black background. Kawano’s red chop mark is in the lower right hand corner. Born in Hokkaido in 1916, Kawano studied at Kawabata Art School during the 1930s. He gained an international his reputation through successful solo exhibitions in North America and elsewhere. His prints frequently depict children and animals, combining Western-style elements with the tradition of woodblock printmaking. Kaoru Kawano’s works are also appreciated for the way in which they incorporate the woodgrain of the block into the design.

Print is loose and wrapped on foam board and with black matting. Print has small punctures on each corner and a small rip to the upper left corner. Measures approximately 11″ x 16.5″ tall. Mid century signed woodblock print by KAWANO KAORU. There is residual staining from the adhesive to the matte. The print itself has a bit of the staining but is covered by the matte. No staining only the surrounding area and on the matte. The matte does have a tear as well and wasn’t going to keep it with the print. Measurements: 9″ x 15″. Overview: Up for sale is this stunning woodblock print, “Red Kimono” by modernist Japanese printer, Kaoru Kawano. Kawano is well-known as one of the earliest Japanese print artists to move from traditionalist styles and themes to more modern art-style subjects. This print dates from the 1950s and is a fantastic example of his work. It depicts a woman in a red kimono and evokes the simplicity of traditional Japan and a new modern style. Print is in very good condition. Minor scuffing on the leg area of the woman. Paper is slightly bowed (likely from rolling), but should flatten out nicely.
