Rare Old Japanese Woodblock Kitagawa Utamaro Courtesan with Elaborate Coiffure

Offered here is this rare old Japanese woodblock print of “A Courtesan with an Elaborate Coiffure” by Kitagawa Utamaro. The original work by the artist was produced in the late 1700s. This particular print appears to be from a re-carved edition, possibly published by Fusui Gabo in the early 1900s. This is based on research and comparisons, however, and I have not removed the print from the frame to look for additional markings. The overall condition is excellent. The print is very clean with even tones, fine clean lines, and deep, crisp impressions. The shimmering background adds even more appeal to this piece. Measurements within the mat are approximately 9.5 by 14.25 inches and the frame’s outer dimensions are approximately 14.25 by 19.25 inches. It is a copy or restrike as is known in the business. A VERY FINE QUALITY OLD I ESTIMATE IT DATES FROM THE LATE MEIJI PERIOD in the EARLY 20TH C. TO POSSIBLY AS LATE AS MID 20TH C GILTWOOD FRAMED WOODBLOCK PRINT (IT IS AN ACTUAL HANDCRAFTED WOODBLOCK–NOT MACHINE MADE) TITLED “High-Ranking Courtesan” from the series Five Shades of Ink in the Northern Quarter (Hokkoku goshiki-zumi). I BELIEVE THIS IS A LATER EDITION OF THAT WORK CREATED ABOUT A CENTURY LATER (I HAVE OWNED ORIGINAL PERIOD UTAMARO WOODBLOCKS AND THEY DID NOT HOLD UP WELL INTO OUR MODERN TIMES). THE OVERALL MEASUREMENTS OF THIS FRAMED WORK ARE ABOUT 16X11 INCHES. THE FRAME IS 1 IN WIDTH. CONDITION OF THE PRINT IS EXCELLENT BUT THE FRAME SHOWS WEAR OF THE AGES. THIS IS A LOVELY DECORATIVE WORK OF ART. THANKS TO THE MET FOR THIS DESCRIPTION: A high-ranking courtesan (oiran) from the Yoshiwara brothel district is captured by the artist in a private moment. Having just washed her hair, she wets the tip of the brush with her lips as she contemplates writing a letter. The black of her uncoiffed hair and the red accents on her lips, the brush, and the rim of her sleeve contrast with the solid neutral background. Antique Keisai Eisen (1790-1848) Japanese Woodblock Print of Courtesan Ca 1830

This is a depiction of a Courtesan with elaborate hairstyle with Kanzashi ornaments typical of the Edo period. There is a woodblock print of a landscape on the wall next to her, and this may be a hint at what Courtesan she was, as Keisai Eisen often put the woodblock within a woodblock as a reference to the person’s hometown or another similar symbolism. This may be one of the 56 woodblocks of courtesans in the album of prints from the series A Tokaido Board Game of Courtesans, Fifty-three Pairings in the Yoshiwara (Keisei dochu sugoroku, Mitate Yoshiwara gojusan tsui). Condition: Condition is commensurate with age and use. Very minor creases and scuffs. Tiny tape fragment on top right corner. Measurements: 13 x 8 1/4 inches. Unless described as being new, the items for sale are vintage or used and it may show evidence of wear. The description refers to the overall condition and details. KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO. Original Japanese Woodblock Print. A Courtesan & her Maiko

Granted to your attention amazing original woodblock print COURTESAN AND HER MAIKO by great artist KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO in 1806. He was painter and print artist, Kitagawa Utamaro’s best pupil. He began designing prints of beautiful women using the name Kikumaro. From 1804 changed his name to Tsukimaro. 1820 ceased to design prints, painting instead hanging scrolls of beauties in a style influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, which he signed’Kansetsu’. His last dated work is an illustration for a’kyoka’ anthology published in 1836. Full large oban size (15 1/4 X 10 1/2) untrimmed, unframed. This print printed in “aizuri-e”, the colors are great. The term aizuri-e (Japanese: “blue printed picture”) usually refers to Japanese woodblock prints that are printed entirely in blue. This print is in very good condition, reinforced by professional restorer using thin japanese washi paper on the back because of old age. Depicting two Beauties, one is cortesan and another one her attendant. The portraiture of these two beauties is excellent and created in great traditional style of Tsukimaro’s teacher Kitagawa Utamaro. The item “KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO. Original Japanese Woodblock Print. We believe this to be an antique original woodblock print c 1796. Size is 21 1/4″ by 16 1/4″. Art view is 14″ by 9 1/2″. Clay colored matting and gold white washed frame. I have not had this out of the frame. Please see my other listings for a similar style print. Update -per a request I have taken this out of the frame. It was NOT glued to the matting, there were 3 small pieces of tape holding it on the mat. I also found some stamps on the backing paper. I put it back together best I could but the backing is now cut and it is not taped down to the mat. I don’t have framers tape to properly do it. See condition above and photos for further details.
