Kawase Hasui MOUNT FUJI From TAGO-NO-URA BAY Japanese Woodblock Print 1930s
Author: adminApr 28
Hasui Kawase (Japanese, 1883 -1957) was one of modern Japan’s most important and prolific printmakers. He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by Western art. Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui’s works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting. Hasui designed approximately 620 prints over a career that spanned nearly forty years. Towards the end of his life the government recognized him as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese culture. He worked closely with the publisher Watanabe Shozoburo. This print, known as “Mount Fuji from Tago-no-ura Bay” is part of a collection of smaller landscape prints known as “postcard prints” published by Watanabe Publishers. A large collection of shin hanga prints came on the market after the death in 2003 of Robert Muller, a collector and dealer. Published in the 1930s, these prints had been stored for decades and were in excellent condition. Image Size is approximately 3 5/8″ high by 5 5/8″ wide. Framed in gold metal frame, with double mat, size 10″ x 12″. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The seller is “laureleileen” and is located in this country: US.
