This is a woodblock print by Kawase Tosui. It is rubbed with a woodblock on a silk book (silk fabric), not on Japanese paper. Although there are only a few types and numbers, such silk-bound woodblock prints exist among Tomoe Sui’s works. Silk-bound books are usually used for hanging scroll works of old Japanese paintings. Date of production = unknown, but it is quite old. The overall size of the print paper is approximately 16 cm (length) x 9.8 cm (width) 6.2 x 3.8. Please refer to the photos. Hasui Kawase Japanese Woodblock Print Art Hanga Snow Japan 1922 Shinhanga Ukiyoe. Please check the picture. Born as the eldest son of a merchant of threadwork, his uncle was the playwright Kanagaki Roubun. He was a student of Kaburaki Kiyokata and received the name “Tomoe” at that time. He later became acquainted with Shozaburo Watanabe, and also became interested in woodblock prints after seeing “Eight Views of Omi” by Shinsui Ito, a fellow student of Kaburaki Kiyokata. In 1918, he published the Shiobara Trilogy from the Watanabe Print Shop, and thereafter published many landscape prints throughout his life.
