Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a ukiyo-e artist active during the late Edo period. His unique style earned him nicknames like the eccentric painter. Demonstrating exceptional artistic talent from childhood, Kuniyoshi became a disciple of Utagawa Toyokuni at age 15. He excelled at warrior paintings, earning the title Kuniyoshi the Warrior Painter. While creating muscular warrior illustrations, he also produced numerous comical and endearing caricatures featuring anthropomorphized cats-his personal favorite-alongside fish, raccoon dogs, and other creatures. His works, rich in rebellious spirit and satire, garnered overwhelming support from the public of his time. This attracted numerous disciples, forming the largest faction of ukiyo-e artists. This classic shin-hanga print shows the Heian Shrine Garden under a glowing moon, with soft bokashi shading and visible woodgrain impressions – hallmarks of traditional hand printing. Details. Formal Name: 2 print from Keinen Kacho Gafu. Year of publication: 1891. × 46.5 cm(14.4×18.4 inch). Condition: Illustrations faintly foxed, some faintly dulled. He studied ukiyo-e when he was young, studied Japanese painting in the Shijo school Suzuki Hyakunen, and later worked as a Japanese painter. The elaborate bird-and-flower paintings have received high praise in the world, and the “Keinen Kacho Gafu” have won awards at the Chicago World’s Fair and the Paris World’s Fair. Maki is the assumed name of Maejima Taadaki. He studied under the famous printmaker Onchi, and quickly became acclaimed for his embossed prints, dealing with a range of subjects. This print is from 1969, and is entitled “Poem 16″ in pencil at lower center. Numbered 120/150 at lower left. Signed at lower right. This print was released in a series of 21 prints, which was entitled “Festive Wine” and based on ancient Japanese poems from the Kinfaku. It is matted within a folio intended to display the poem on back, but the print appears to have been laid down on the wrong folio (the one for Poem 17). An insert with the correct poem is inserted. It comes with a cerificate of authenticity from artelino. Condition: Print is in excellent condition. It is laid down to the folio. Measurements: Print measures approximately 8.75 inches high x 6.75 inches wide. Folio measures 12 inches high x 9 inches wide. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, an unpaid item case will be opened. More pictures available on request.
