Original Utagawa Kuniyoshi Tsukuda Island Japanese Woodblock Framed Circa 1920s Reprint. This is a lovely antique original 1920s reprint of a Utagawa Kuniyoshi woodblock titled Tsukuda Island from the 19th century, of the Tsuduka Island from the Series “famous places in the eastern capital”. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798- 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. His artwork incorporated aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature. Mild fading, minor creasing and rubbing commensurate with age and use. Framed under glass with in fine black and gold wood frame. Frame is loose upon touch. Measurements: framed: 16 1/2 x 18 3/4 x 1 inches; 9 1/2 x 14. Weight: 3 lbs 9 oz. A series by artist Ebina Masao. 1953 Original Woodblock Prints on handmade washi paper. Each print depicts a scene from The Tales of Genji. The publisher is Yamada Shoin. Some are also decorated with Silver and Gold mica. Very elegant and sublime images. Approximate Print Dimensions Width 33 cm and Height 24 cm (13 inches X 9 inches).
