Ichikawa Danjuro VII as a Bearer Tough Guy. Colorful and fun print of the great Ichikawa Danjuro in the role of a cantankerous palanquin bearer. Despite his low class, his robes are fabulous, with red cap, swelling black outer kimono with giant character embroidered on it, and red and green robes underneath, the green with the “mimasu” (triple cup) pattern that was Danjuro’s. Look at the scowl on the actor’s face, the way his hands tense on the boards he carries, and the solid grip of his feet on the ground. This is the manner by which Toyokuni I brought emotion and intensity into his woodblock print designs, without relying on extraneous supports.
