At twelve she began art instruction under Ferdinand Richardt but it ended abruptly two years later when her father died and her family resettled in San Francisco. Hyde studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York between 1888 and 1889. The following year she departed on a four year sojourn in Europe, which included studying with Franz Skarbina in Berlin, Rafael Collins and Albert Sterner in Paris, and months in Holland and England. In Paris, Hyde met Félix Régamey who introduced her to “loveliness of things Japanese” and this meeting was to have a profound effect on her life and work. Returning to San Francisco, Hyde sought out subjects in Chinatown and produced her first series of color etchings. In 1899, Hyde voyaged to Japan where she became an ardent student of the Japanese language and a student of classical brush painting with an Austrian artist working in Tokyo, and it was from him that she learned the skills of carving wood blocks. She eventually accepted the Japanese system of divided labor and employed Japanese carvers and printers (Shohiro Murate carved her woodcuts for eleven years). Hyde exhibited both nationally and internationally and her work won honors in Japan. Hyde was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Printmakers Society of California, the Chicago Society of Artists and a life member of the Société de la Grauvre en Couleur. Helen Hyde died on May 13, 1919 in Pasadena, California, where she had undergone another surgery for her cancer. A vast collection of her works are within the confines of the Library of Congress in Washington D. Examples of Hyde’s works can be seen at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D. This print can be found in the Smithsonian. The item “Helen Hyde (American 1868-1919) Signed 1907 Japanese Woodblock Color Print Sgnd” is in sale since Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Toshi Yoshida Japanese Woodblock Print Framed! Titled: Pagoda in Kyoto. Signed: Toshi Yoshida pencil-signed? A vintage Toshi Yoshida Japanese woodblock print. A warm sunset scene with cool colors featuring a traditional pagoda with an ancient willow tree beautifully reflected in the pond in the foreground. Gathered from the internet. T oshi Yoshida was born in Tokyo in 1911 and lived until 1995. Was a Japanese printmaking. Artist associated with the sosaku-hanga. Movement, and the son of renowned shin-hanga. Toshi Yoshida prints are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum in London and other international museum collections. I believe this to be a “lifetime edition print” with an original pencil-signed signature. This is based on the lack of a visible imprint. When viewed on an angle in the light. From that you would see from a blocked-signed signature post-death, and the shiny look of the graphite pencil lead from the signature when viewed in the same way. However, note that I have no deep knowledge of Japanese woodblock print age and signature verification and do not claim to be an expert in this area. The print was professionally framed. Kabutoya Galleries label with artist, title and medium listed on back (see photos). Vintage framing shop label on back (see photos). Double matting, with outer matte lavender in color and inner black border. Silver frame with a brushed effect on the sides (frame is easily removable, see photos). Woodblock print has good colors, and clear artist marks, title and signature. Note the print itself is fixed (glued) to the matte backing and front, and is therefore sandwiched between the matte front and back. On very close inspection, there are visible bubbled areas on some of the edges where the print is raised from this process (see the last few close-up photos). Frame is in very good condition, however there is a crack to the glass (reflective glass) in the right, bottom corner, which should be replaced. (Please read the condition description carefully and enlarge and view photos as part of the condition description, since the print is not returnable). Framed this measures 13 inches x 16 inches. Full print itself measures 8 inches x 10-1/2 inches. Matting border measure 1-3/4 inches. Please note, I have no deep knowledge of Japanese woodblock prints, and the information I’ve provided above comes from internet research and the labels on the back of the framed print. From a smoke-free and pet-free home. Please ask any questions. The item “Vintage Signed Toshi Yoshida Japanese Woodblock Print PAGODA IN KYOTO Framed” is in sale since Tuesday, November 30, 2021. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The seller is “phylsister” and is located in Wakefield, Rhode Island. This item can be shipped to United States.
