Up for sale very rare mid 19th century Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock print of the Kabuki actor Seki Sanjuro II as Azuma no Yoshiro by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III). The year of the work is 1833, published by Joshuya Kinzo , edo period. Print is done on mulberry tree paper. Upper left side of the print inscription reads as Azuma no Yoshiro, Seki Sanjuro and lower right corner artist’s seal. You will be able to find more information on this print on The British Museum Website. Measurement : Print Height 13.5 in. Width 8 3/4 in. The frame height 14 1/2 in. Condition: Signs of wear commensurate with age. Paper discoloration and faded colors due to sun exposure. Overall age appropriate condition. This is a very rare print depicting a busy Japanese city street. Circa late 18th century. Utamaro was a Japanese artist. Hes one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, is best known for his pictures of women, cityscapes. He also produce nature studies particular illustrated books of insects. He produced over 2000 prints and it was one of the few artists to achieve fame throughout Japan in his lifetime. Condition: laid down, fair condition, lots of restoration and loses. Measurements: 14 1/4 x 9.
