Collection of Asian art formed by the previous owner during his travels in Japan between 1882 and 1920. An original Toyokuni III Utagawa Japanese woodblock triptych titled’Kana-dehon Chushingura’, (a kabuki play about the famous 47 ronin ordered by the Shogun to commit seppuku for attacking court official Kira Yoshinaka; taking revenge for their Daimyo) published by Tsujiokaya Bunsuke 1862. Size: (L) 36.4 x 25.8 (C) 36.5 x25.7 (R) 36.5x 25.7. Cm’s. Kunisada’s 47 Ronin remains one of the greatest ukiyo-e series of the late Edo period. On very fine hand made Gampi paper, a well preserved lifetime impression. The seventeenth-century English writer and diarist John Evelyn wrote about Japanese paper in his diary of 22 June 1664. Among the collection there were some papers, which he described as: a sort of paper very broad, thin, and fine, like parchment, of an amber yellow, exceedingly glorious and pretty to look on. Some signs of wear commensurate with Antique/some toning and creasing with small holes here and there, overall a well preserved lifetime impression in fine condition. The design visible on the reverse, typical of prints on paper produced during the period. Having a range of hues, texture and translucency created by 18th – 19th century paints unattained by later and modern reproductions. At the end of the Edo period. (16031867), Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi and Kunisada were the three best representatives of the Japanese color woodcut in Edo capital city of Japan, now Tokyo. Was the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of Ukiyo e woodblock prints in 19th century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries. Condition – This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Light horizontal fold near bottom of left panel, light. A couple light creases at edges, small spot in margin. Please see photos for details. Beautiful, large format triptych depicting a garden with the “Three Friends of Winter, ” pine, bamboo, and plum. The trio of trees symbolizes steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. At left, a tall pine towers over the garden pond, with stone slabs forming a bridge across the water below. In the center, a cluster of bamboo lines the walkway in from of a house. At right, a plum tree is covered with beautiful pink blossoms and buds, with a few birds perched on the branches. The pond is surrounded with shrubs and trees, with a row of evergreens shaded in blue and snow-capped mountains in the distance. A lovely design, commissioned by the Franklin Mint in 1980 and printed in Toshi Yoshida’s studio in Japan. The only triptych ever created by Toshi Yoshida, this beautiful image is rarely seen on the market and would make an impressive framed presentation. Part of a collection of Asian art formed by the previous owner during his travels in Japan between 1882 and 1920. Kunichika was a student of Tokyo’s then-leading print maker, Utigawa Kunisada. In July 1874, the magazine Shinbun hentai said that: Color woodcuts are one of the specialties of Tokyo, and that Kyosai, Yoshitoshi, Yoshiku, Kunichika, and Gink├┤ are the experts in this area. Kabuki actor Matsusuke IV, said that when visiting actors backstage for the purpose of sketching them, Kunichika would not socialize but would concentrate intensely on his work.
