This book is a magnificent pictorial narrative of the story of Dengyo Daishi Saicho, founder of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, a huge monastery in Japan, and published to coincide with commemorative events related to Buddhism. The pictures were painted by Tuchiya Shuka, who was active in the business of reproducing classical books, in addition to other famous Japanese painters of the time. This item is not new. It is part of a series called “The 12 seasons of Genji, ” about the Tale of Genji (some call it the worlds first novel, a classic work of Japanese literature written by the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu in the early years of the 11th century).
