Incredible original Suikoden series collector print! He was active in the Edo Period during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. His work was diverse and covered a broad range of subjects. This print is from Kuniyoshis great Suikoden series The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden that made him famous. The prints from this series are the first single-sheet color prints of the Suikoden theme and the first series of warrior prints designed by any ukiyo-e artist. The story is based on the semi-historical Chinese novel. Outlaws of the Marsh. The book is considered to be one of the four great classical works of Chinese literature. These rebels sought to protect the poor and downtrodden, very much like Robin Hoods band in England. Kuniyoshi designed this series between 1827 and 1830. Utagawa Kuniyoshis masterworks are in the collections of many of the worlds great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York; the Museum of Fine Arts , Boston; the British Museum, London ; the State Hermitage Museum , Saint Petersburg, Russia; and the Tokyo National Museum , Tokyo.
