“House on the River”, by Shotei. This is a crepe version and is an antique frame. Please see photos for detailed condition. Frame shows wear commensurate with age. Japanese Woodblock Print, Takahashi Shotei also called Hiroaki. A rare copy of a beautiful possibly pre-earthquake? Small print (4″ x 8 1/2″ inches) with very narrow margins. Japanese print 8 1/2″ x 4″. Frame 11 5/8″ 6 7/8″. At a young age he was trained in Nihon-ga, the traditional Japanese painting style by his uncle Matsumoto Fuko, and beginning around 1907 Shotei started designing for the Watanabe Color Print Company. Shotei was among the first designers to be recruited into Watanabe’s stable of artists, which would later expand to include Goyo, Shinsui, Hasui, Kasamatsu, Koson and Koitsu among others. The fires ignited by the earthquake raged for three days, and Watanabe’s print shop and all the woodblocks created by Shotei and the other early shin hanga artists, were destroyed. After the earthquake Shotei created another 250 prints mostly depicting scenic Japanese landscapes in the shin hanga style he had helped to define. He continued to work for Watanabe, but also worked with the publishers Fusui Gabo and Shobido Tanaka, where he had more control over the finished print than was possible with Watanabe. Shotei used a variety of names, signatures and seals during his lifetime. From 1907 until 1922 he used the name Shotei, and after 1922 Hiroaki and Komei. Antique Japanese Woodblock Print Poss by Hiroshige or Shotei 14.1/2 X 6.1/2 Inch

This is a very attractive Antique Japanese Woodblock Print. It is mounted on a paper mount. Utagawa Hiroshige, born Ando Hiroshige, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. OR IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT. This also could Possibly be by Takahashi Shote. Hiroaki Takahashi was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1871. [2] As a young artist he was given the artistic name Shotei by his uncle, Matsumoto Fuko, under whose tutelage he was apprenticing. [2] When he was 16 years old, he started a job with the Imperial Household Department of Foreign Affairs, where he copied the designs of foreign ceremonial objects. [2] As with many Japanese woodblock artists over his lifetime he signed his work with various names and worked for several publishing companies. After studying art, Shotei and Terazaki Kogyo founded the Japan Youth Painting Society in 1889. In 1907, as a successful artist, he was recruited by Shozaburo Watanabe to contribute to the Shin Hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan. Watanabe helped to fulfill the Western demand for Ukiyoe woodblock prints which would be similar to familiar historical masters of that genre, including Hiroshige. In about 1921 Shotei added the artistic name of Hiroaki. In 1923 the Great Kanto earthquake (and subsequent fire) destroyed Watanabe’s facilities; this included all Shin Hanga woodblocks. Thus, Shotei recreated prior designs destroyed in the Great Kanto earthquake and also continued to produce new woodblocks. Shotei died of pneumonia on February 11, 1945. [2] There is a persistent rumor that he died in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, but this is incorrect. The print measures about 14.1/2 inches x 6.1/2 inches [37 x 17 cms]. The mount is about 18.1/4 x 9.3/4 inches [46.5 x 24.5 cms]. Print is in good condition. It is coloured in rich black and blues with a hint of warmth. There is a printed mark in red bottom right difficult to make out. The mount has quite a lot of marks and stains. THERE IS A SMALL REPAIR TO A TEAR BOTTOM LEFT. PLEASE SEE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR CONDITION. I would guess this will be from about 1900. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian/Oriental Antiques\Japanese\Prints”. The seller is “kensphotogallery” and is located in this country: GB.
