Shiro was born in Asakusa, Tokyo, and became a pupil of Kaburaki Kiyokata in 1911 at an even younger age than his fellow Tokyoites Shinsui and Hasui. He studied painting in the’Nihonga’ manner and took up landscape. It was this side of his work which attracted the attention of the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, who commissioned his first print from him in 1919. Thereafter he worked regularly for Watanabe until after the Pacific War. His lyrical townscapes in particular made his work popular with Westerners, and his’Shinobazu pond’ has been extensively reprinted by the firm of Watanabe since it first appeared in 1932 reproduced in Smith, 1983, no. In the 1950s he became attracted by the ideals of the’Sosaku Hanga’ movement and began to produce his own prints, usually on a larger scale and with a looser construction than those done for Watanabe. His prints are relatively few and include the series’Tokyo kinko hakkei no uchi’ (‘Eight Views around Tokyo’, 1939). He also worked in the 1950s for Unsodo of Kyoto. Since the war he also developed his own distinctive style of ink-painting. More pictures are available!!! It is important to know when purchasing items that. Please keep this in mind.
