This is an original woodblock print by the famous French/Japanese artist, Paul Jacoulet. Entitled Fumes de Santal Mandchoukuo (sandalwood smoke). The subject matter is a stunning beauty from Manchuria in a formal gown. She is lounging on a sete while staring into a large bronze koro (incense burner) with the smoke from the sandalwood incense drifts up. Also on the back is a red number stamp 191 out of a total of 250 (see picture 9) produced, as well as, the Paul Jacoulet. Watermark in the upper right (not visible in the images) with the elaborate P. Used on his papers (see picture 10). It is pencil signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner (see pictures 4). Above the Mitsu-tomoe seal. This is the only print with this seal. It was specially dedicated to King George VI of England. Seals of the carver, Kentaro Maeda, and printer, Shunosuke Fujii, on the lower left margin. Published: 21 December 1948. The print measures 18 3/4″ x 14 1/8″ (paper size) with print 12″ x 15 1/2″. The print is in very fine condition with strong colors. There are a few tape marks, most notably on the back side (see pictures 7, 8, & 11), but almost unseen from the front.
