Frame measures approximately 21 3/8 inches by 17 1/2 inches. Visible artwork measures approximately 11 1/8 by 8 3/8 inches, but continues under the double matted edge. Woodblock has rich colors. Light reflections on the Tru Vue conservation glass can be seen in some pictures. These are not blemishes to the piece, but only photography reflections. Frame shows light surface wear. Original Toshikata (1866 – 1908) Japanese Woodblock Print Gathering Mushrooms: Women of the Shotoku Era (1711 – 16) Series; Thirty-six Selected Beauties, 1891 – 1894 (Sanjuroku Kasen) Gathering Mushrooms: Women of the Shotoku Era (1711 – 16) – Toshikata’s lovely series “Thirty-six Selected Beauties” was one of the great masterwork series of the late 19th century. Reflecting back on the classic beauty prints of the previous era, Toshikata created a series of 36 prints illustrating the daily activities of women from various time periods and walks of life. Condition is commensurate with age and wear. Minor losses and discoloration throughout. 15 x 10 1/4 inches. Mizuno Toshikata 1890s Meiji Japanese Color Woodblock from Modern Beauties

Toshikata was trained as a painter and printmaker in Tokyo in the 1880s. He became a well-known Ukiyo-e printmaker and newspaper illustrator in the 1890s, designing war prints and battle scenes based on the Sino-Japanese War and later as a designer of “bijin” (beautiful women) and genre prints. He produced the “Modern Beauties” series in the 1890s (according to the British Museum, which has an impression of this print in its collection). 3 in the series, bears seals lower left and upper right. It is in average condition with surface soiling and minor staining and the color appears to have faded. It is attached to backing with mat tape on the upper margins. It measures 9 3/8″ x 13 7/8″.
