This is a very attractive Antique Japanese Woodblock Print. It is mounted on a paper mount with a tissue cover. On the cover is written in ink could be printed? Calystegia sepium and western kingfisher by shigemasa. 1739 – 8 March 1820 was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist from Edo. He was one of the leading printmakers of his day, but his works have been slightly obscure. He is noted for images of beautiful women (bijinga). He was taught by Shigenaga and has been referred to as “a chameleon” who adopted to changing styles. He was less active after the rise of Torii Kiyonaga and produced relatively few works considering the length of his career. He is also noted for his haikai (poetry) and shodo (Japanese calligraphy). In his later years he used the studio name Kosuisai. [TAKEN FROM WIKIPEDIA]The print measures about 11 inches x just over 7 inches [28 x 18.3 cms]. The mount is about 14 x 10 inches [36 x 26]. Print is coloured in subtle browns and blues. The mount has several marks and stains. On the back there is a price ticket for 50 Yen and I think a name and address in pencil. Possibly for when it was framed. PLEASE SEE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR CONDITION. I would guess this will be from about 1900. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian/Oriental Antiques\Japanese\Prints”. Kitao Masayoshi (1686-1764), Japanese Woodblock Print, Ukiyo-e

Kitao Masayoshi (1686-1764), Japanese Woodblock Print, Ukiyo-e

Omori Hikoshichi tussling with the demon amid rain. This print is in the collection of the British Museum. Curator’s comments : Omori Hikoshichi was a warrior general serving the Ashikaga Shogunate who took the head of Kusunoki Masashige at the battle of Minatogawa in 1336. Hurrying to attend celebrations he met a beautiful young woman struggling along a mountain road. Hikoshichi carried her on his back but as they crossed a stream she turned into an evil demon, the spirit of Masashige trying to recover his heirloom sword Kikusui. The subject was often treated in warrior prints by Ukiyo-e artists and here the dramatic composition taking place in a storm is attributed to Masayoshi, a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa. The inclusion of a horse in the composition is an unusual variant. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our woodblock prints unless stated otherwise.
