Title: Kankai Pavilion, Wakaura Bay / First printing. Made in 1950 / original block was broken, no more printed. Japanese woodblock print / handmade print from original block. Watanabe red 6mm seal. Size: 24 cm× 36.5cm. Attention: If it is below the purchace price, the lot will pass. Kawase Hasui, whose name is Kawase Bunjiro, was born at Shiba, Tokyo. Kanagaki Robun, a noted playwright of early Meiji period was his uncle. From childhood he loved to paint; later he became a pupil of Kaburkai Kiyokata. And in the spring of 1912 exhibited a picture in the Tatumi Exhibition of Painting. During the early stages of his art career, Hasui produced only paintings; he became. Interested in woodblock prints after seeing Shinsui’s prints “Eight sight of Omi”. Which were shown at the exhibition of the Kyodokai sponsored by Kiyokata’s school. Some of Hasui’s small landscape pictures led Shozaburou Watanabe to see his possibilities. Hasui then did his first color prints from a series of sketches made at Shiobara in 1918. Since then he had continued actively producing prints. He passed away in Nov. 27.1957 in Tokyo. IMPORTANT NOTICE. EMS of Japan Post Service will be restarted from 1st June. KAWASE HASUI lived from 1883 until 1957. He is Most Highly Regarded for the Exquisite Colour, Amazing Perspective and Inspiring Ambiance of his wide Range of Landscape Woodblocks. During his Life he Created Over 600 Different Woodblock Scenes and he is Recognised as one of Most Prolific and Most Talented of Shin Hanga Artists from the Early 20th Century. It is no wonder that a Year Prior to his Death he was Honored with the Title of a Living National Treasure.
