This stunning original collection of Japanese Surimono woodblock prints were commissioned by the Franklin Mint Gallery of Fine Art and created by Toshi Yoshido in the Yoshido family studio in Japan. These are not reproduction prints and are beautiful. I have 6 prints all together and they are framed and matted in their original teak wood frames. The prints are entitled “The Flowers and Birds of the Oriental Year” and depict birds in their matching seasonal landscape. Each print has the artist’s signature “Toshi”, his chop mark and the title of the prints are in the lower left & right corners of the prints while another artist’s signature is pencil signed by the artist “Toshi Yoshido” (in Kansi) in the bottom borders. Minimal scratching to the plexiglass and some scuffs, scratches to the teak frames. They have the Franklin Mint Certificate of Authenticity sticker on back of most. They were aquired all together from a fine estate sale of wonderful things. They are in wonderful vintage condition, colors, are vivid and vibrant, are in layers on the original Japanese Washi paper. These fabulous prints are rare and ready to hang. Will look awesome hanging as a collection together, a gallery wall. The frames are 12 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ and the prints are 6 1/2″ x 9″ inside frame as far as I can see. Please look at all pictures. Toshi Yoshida Winter Japanese Woodblock Print Franklin Mint Birds of the Seasons

JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT “WINTER” BY TOSHI YOSHIDA. FRANKLIN MINT “BIRDS OF THE SEASONS” SERIES. The print is titled “Winter” Japanese title “Sekisetsu no Hakagei ni” translates to “Sitting Under Snow-Covered Leaves”. It’s part of a 4-print series titled “Birds of the Seasons”, commissioned by the Franklin Mint Gallery of Fine Art in 1980 and published by the Yoshida family studio. The image depicts a Daurian Redstart bird (which migrates to Japan every winter) perched in a snow-covered Aoki bush with bright red berries. The print is nicely detailed and skillfully executed with “bokashi” shading, distinctly visible “woodgrain” to the entire blue-grey background. The image is unusually large and measures about 19 5/8″ tall and 11 3/4″ wide (“double-oban”). The print is matted in its original Franklin Mint teak frame with acrylic “glass” that measures approximately 27″ x 18 1/2″. The print is signed in the lower right margin with a Japanese “kanji” signature that reads Yoshida Toshi. ” The back of the frame has a label that reads “F. At an early age he absorbed the techniques of old-style woodblock printing from the artisans in his father’s studio. It wasn’t until his father’s death in 1950 that Toshi broke from his past and from the naturalism landscape images Hiroshi was known for. In 1952, he began a series of abstract woodcuts, influenced by his brother, Hodaka Yoshida. From 1971 to 1994, until the last years of his life, Toshi worked almost exclusively on animal prints. Condition of this Toshi Yoshida woodblock is EXCELLENT. The colors are strong and I don’t see any noticeable toning or foxing. I did not remove the print from the frame. The teak frame is also in good shape with a few minor bumps and scratches. Overall, this collectible print looks fantastic and displays beautifully. A beautiful complete original suite of four large Japanese woodblock prints by the artist Toshi Yoshida. A sticker located on reverse of each print reads “FMGFA 1977″. Commissioned by the Franklin Mint Gallery of Fine Art in 1980 and published by the Yoshida family studio. Rare to find entire set that has not been broken up since issued in the 70′s. These prints are not a reproduction and make a statement when hanging. Those familiar with Yoshida’s work will appreciate their beauty. Dimensions of each frame is approximately 19” x 26.8”. Visibility inside the matt is. 12.25” x 20.25”. The set of four woodblock prints is titled “Birds of the Seasons” and e. Ach woodblock print depicts a bird in the correlating seasonal landscape. Each print is signed lower right in pencil “Toshi Yoshida” (in Kanji). Various scratches on plexiglass and chipping on frames. Slight wrinkling of prints under frame. One print is loosely fit into the frame and shifts position minimally on occasion. Dust paper on reverse is taped and wrinkled in some spots. Prints not examined outside of frames.
