Marvelous Meiji Era Beauty Portrait. This striking bijin-ga or beauty print is, of course, a Kitagawa Utamaro masterwork. Without a doubt, Utamaro Japanese, c. His classic head and shoulders portraits of courtesans, geishas and teahouse waitresses are among the most sought after of all prints. In fact, many serious collectors consider Utamaro’s beauties to be the very soul of Ukiyo, the art of the Floating World. The title of this marvelous print is Two Beauties at Leisure. Formal Name: Futamiura Bijin Zu (Beauties of Futamiura). Contents: 1 Wood block print A piece from the 1918 special edition of “Ukiyo-e Ha Gashu”. Originally handwritten on paper. Year of publication: 1918. Size: 39.5×20.5cm (15.4×8.1 inchi). Ukiyoe-Ha-Gashu is the first complete collection of Ukiyo-e in Japan that systematically contains handwritten Ukiyo-e. The first edition was published in 1906-08 and exhibited at the Japan-England Exposition (1910). The exquisite and luxurious woodblock printing technique, which is said to have required 200 times repeated woodblocks to complete a single print, is considered worthy of special mention in the history of Japanese woodblock printing. Ukiyoe-Ha-Gashu was published in several editions, including the first edition in a limited edition of 200 copies, a top-bound edition, and a standard edition. This is the third edition of the special top-bound edition, and according to the preface to the book, This edition has been further revised and published in response to the requests of enthusiasts. The works and color woodblock prints in this edition are not much different from those in the first limited edition. There are light stains on the paper mat. This item is not new. Mizuno Toshikata 1890s Meiji Japanese Color Woodblock from Modern Beauties

Toshikata was trained as a painter and printmaker in Tokyo in the 1880s. He became a well-known Ukiyo-e printmaker and newspaper illustrator in the 1890s, designing war prints and battle scenes based on the Sino-Japanese War and later as a designer of “bijin” (beautiful women) and genre prints. He produced the “Modern Beauties” series in the 1890s (according to the British Museum, which has an impression of this print in its collection). 3 in the series, bears seals lower left and upper right. It is in average condition with surface soiling and minor staining and the color appears to have faded. It is attached to backing with mat tape on the upper margins. It measures 9 3/8″ x 13 7/8″.
