Original woodblock triptych print on fine hand made Gampi paper depicting a Samurai brawl. Ublished by Arai Kisaburo 1883. Size: (L) 23.3 x 36 (C) 24.8 x 36 (R) 24.2 x 36 cm’s. Excellent detail as shown. Some signs of wear commensurate with Antique, slight smudging, toning. Overall very fine condition. The design visible on the reverse, typical of prints on paper produced during the period. Having a range of hues, texture and translucency created by 18th – 19th century paints unattained by later and modern reproductions. Part of a collection of Asian art formed by the previous owner during his travels in Japan between 1882 and 1920. Kunichika was a student of Tokyo’s then-leading print maker, Utigawa Kunisada. In July 1874, the magazine Shinbun hentai said that: Color woodcuts are one of the specialties of Tokyo, and that Kyosai, Yoshitoshi, Yoshiku, Kunichika, and Ginkô are the experts in this area. Kabuki actor Matsusuke IV, said that when visiting actors backstage for the purpose of sketching them, Kunichika would not socialize but would concentrate intensely on his work.
