JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT TORII KOTONDO AME (Rain)

Torii Kotondo (1900 – 1976) is one of his series, “Twelve Aspects of Woman”, originally published in 1930. It is not a poster, nor is it an enhanced “Giclee” print, but a very collectible Japanese woodblock print. Kotondo’s signature and seal are in the image on the. Right side of the print. This art is even more beautiful up close and personal. When you receive it, take particular note of the subtle, Bokashi shading and get a closer look at the exquisite “Gauffrage”, or embossing, that accentuates the “rain” and the folds of her kimono. This is a very old technique (circa 1120), developed by Japanese artists to add dimensionality and life to art on an otherwise flat surface. You will also be able to appreciate the highly detailed carving, especially the appearance of individual hairs. You will not see these important distinctions in posters or reproductions. This is truly a stunning example of Japanese Bijin-ga style. Paper size: 17.5 inches x 12.5 inches (44.45 cm x 31.75 cm) Image size:16 inches x 10.125 inches (40.64 cm x 25.72 cm). The print is in excellent condition. Full margins; never framed. There are no notable marks, discolorations, scuffs, stains, or folds. It has been kept in a smoke-free environment.
