This is an original. (wood block print) by the mid Meiji era artist. The subject matter is from a series of 47 Famous Samurai Heroes by Ogata. On the right side of the print (see picture 4) is the name of the artist, as well as, a censor seal. On the left side of the print, there is the. Date (Meiji 35th – 1902), the address of the publish. And the name of the publisher (see picture 5). This print is oban (large size) measuring 14″ x 9″ — 35.5 x 23 cm. The last two pictures show the typical bleed through of the dyes during the printing process of an ukiyoe woodblock print. The paper this print is made of took over 200 days to make. The paper is made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree and made to last virtually indefinitely. Having been stored in a protective sleeve for over 100 years, this print remains in very fine condition , crisp with full.
