Original YOSHITOSHI Japanese Woodblock Print 100 Aspects of Moon Cry of the Fox

The cry of the Fox (Konkai)from the 100 Aspects of the Moon series, c. Original circa 1886 Japanese Woodblock Print by Yoshitoshi, guaranteed! This print is widely considered as one of Yoshitoshis masterpieces. It depicts the Kyogen story of a fox who had lost his family to a hunter and transforms himself into a priest who happens to be the huntersuncle Hakuzou, in order to convince the hunter of giving up killing foxes. In this scene as he is returning home he starts to morph back into a fox and shortly falls into a trap set by the hunter. Yoshitoshi creates a masterful scene of eeriness. The undulating, almost crawling dried grass highlighted by tall tassel-like heads, which resemble foxfires, flames that follow foxes to distract people, all succeed in invoking fear and awe that surround foxes in Japanese folklore. This print has strong and fine gradation of color. The shading of the foxs tail hump and folds of his garment are indicative of earlier and more careful printing. The tassel-like grass heads as well as the white rectangular title box are embossed or blind printed for texture. It measures 14 x 9 ½ inches. It is in good condition. The right-hand margin shows slight transfer of red from an opposing print that once faced this one having been bound in an album. It has an associated paper backing.
