Drizzling Rain in Ukimido. (SAME QUALITY BUT NOT THE EXACT ONES PICTURED). Heisei later edition ATOZURI print from Original woodblocks. Asano Takeji was born in 1900 in Kyoto where he studied arts and crafts at the Kyoto School of painting with Tomikichiro Tokuriki. He became an active member of the sosaku hanga group in Kyoto. Japanese Woodblock Tree Print (blue). This beautiful woodblock piece was created by Joichi Hoshi in 1973. It depicts a blue shaded tree on gold leaf, with his seal in red in the lower right corner (on the print). It is signed and dated in pencil in the lower right, with the title appearing in Japanese (also in pencil) in the left corner. It sat in a large paper envelope from the day it was acquired by him (in 1981). Since that time it has been framed and on display in our gallery. We do not know the pieces history prior to 1981. This piece is in excellent condition. Inspection of the print under natural light reveals no abnormalities or defects. Blacklight inspection reveals no repair work or alteration to the piece. Frame: 17.0 X 17.0 in. Line of Delineation: 9 7/8 X 9 7/8 in. Hammer Prices & References of Similar Works. The work listed here is the only known auctioned piece created by Hoshi. Signature / Photo Description. The signature is in the lower right side of the piece is consistent with known and verifiable signatures created by Joichi Hoshi. The images provided in the above photo library are for your comparison. The signature proof photos were provided by AskArt Inc, and are labeled as such in the photos shown. All photographs taken are high resolution and are generally between 2 and 10 MB in size. Joichi Hoshi (1913 1979) is often referred to as the Father of Japanese tree prints. At the age of 57 he began creating these woodblock prints, he quickly gained notoriety and was often imitated by others looking to follow in his footsteps. Examples of Japanese artists that engaged in this genre were Hajime Namiki (1947 -), Kunio Kaneko (1949 -), Shogo Okamoto (1920 2001) and Fumio Fajita (1933 -). These younger artist were all influenced by Hoshi and looked to his work with great admiration. Damaged artwork will not be accepted for return.
