This is an original ukiyoe (wood block print) by the late Edo era artist, Chikayoshi Toyohara. The subject mater is a kubuki actor playing the part of a famous geisha bijinga (classic beauties of the day)heading out on the town decked out with her hair up in a dozen bekko hair pieces. On the left side of the print (see picture 4) is the name of the artist as well as a censor seal which dates this print to the the end of the Edo Era c. Chikayoshi Toyohara was from the Utagawa school which was the dominate school of wood block printing throughout the late Edo and Meiji eras. This print is oban sized (10″ x 15″ — 25 x 38 cm). Pictures 6, 7, 8, & 9 show the typical bleed through of the dyes during the printing process of an ukiyoe. The paper this book is made of took over 200 days to make and is made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree and made to last virtually indefinitely.
