Junichiro Sekino 1963 original 16/20! RARE Japanese Woodblock Print MC Modern

1963 Modern abstract woodblock print by the artist Jan (Junichiro) Sekino. This piece is for the serious Sekino collector that wants to complete a collection of the finest and rarest of his work. Artwork is signed “Jan Sekino” in the bottom right corner and is numbered 16 / 20 in the bottom left corner. This woodblock is very abstract and very rare, only 20 made. It has a texture not found with most woodblock prints making me wonder if it is more than just a print. In 1963 Sekino taught printmaking at Oregon State University in the United States. The frame is original to the piece. Dimensions are approximately 33” x 27”. Here is a biographical paragraph on the artist. Junichiro Sekino, a painter, graphic designer and a woodblock print maker was one of the greatest artists of the Sosaku Hanga movement- an important current of Japanese art. Sekino was stylistically and technically extremely diverse: he easily switched from figurative to abstract art, from black and white compositions to colourful expression. He was also flexible subjects-wise. The exquisite technical background and experience in Japanese and Western printmaking has put him ahead of many other Sosaku Hanga artists, who although good designers, lacked the technical skills. Sekino sometimes resorted to mixing Western and Japanese techniques in his works. His works were also exhibited outside Japan and bought internationally by such European and American giants as the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York, or The Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In 1958 came an official invitation from the Rockefeller Foundation and the American Japan Society. From then on he travelled and taught around the world. From 1965 onwards he held a position at Kobe University. The item “Junichiro Sekino 1963 original 16/20! RARE Japanese Woodblock Print MC Modern” is in sale since Wednesday, August 30, 2017.
