Boxed set of 12 woodblock printed cards by. Pictured are 12 early small-format woodblock (embossing apparent) prints by the famous Japanese woodblock print artist Kiyoshi Saito. Each woodblock print was made in the form of a gift card and includes a matching envelope. Each is printed on good quality Japanese washi paper, and includes a title and scene number. They are not posthumous restrikes, but life-time editions. April 27, 1907 – November 14, 1997, born in. In 1938, he issued his first prints in his now famous “Winter in Aizu” series. Saito was one of the first Japanese. Artists to have won at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951. Sait’s early works depict villages populated with local Japanese with a high degree of. His more mature works merge modern elements with Japanese tradition. And plant life flattened in two-dimensionality. These are unowned sets, which come from the residual inventory from a bookstore/gallery which operated in Manhattan 1940s-1970s. As such, all cards are in mint condition.
