A Fine Japanese Woodblock Surimono Print by Gototei Kunisada. 7 1/8 x 8 5/8 ins. (18.3 x 21 cms) As surimono were produced in small editions for specific purposes e. New Year cards, poetry club circulars etc. The originals are very rare and very expensive. In the Meiji era ca. 1890 many were reprinted, usually known as Akashi reprints, after the town at which they were produced. Recent research into these reprints has divided them into A, B, C & D categories in descending order of quality, A being the finest and comparable in quality to the originals. The present example is an A class print. Many of the less fine categories have been simplified for reasons of economy, e. Often the poem in the top section is omitted and the range of colours and metallic pigments is reduced. This fine design by Kunisada was originally published ca. It is a portrait of Yang Guifei, a favourite but corrupt concubine of an 8th. Century Tang Dynasty Chinese Emperor. Eventually she caused a rebellion and was hung from a pear tree. The original printing is illustrated in colour and fully described with translations of the poems in Sebastian Izzard’s seminal work Kunisada’s World (1993). The print is in excellent condition with no damage and no repairs. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL PHOTOGRAPHS. Packing Materials: although we re-use as much packing material as possible, we may make a charge for any new materials used. Any such charge will not be greater than our cost price. Personal cheque (known UK customers). Bank / wire transfer (international customers). If choosing to pay by this method. We guarantee each item to be from the period as described. Our guarantee has no time limit. We do not sell for other dealers, we sell only our own stock. Nowadays many sellers, especially internet sellers, show items for sale not belonging to them, either because they have no actual stock of their own or they are advertising items, often of unknown origin, for clients on a commission basis. Such sellers often have very limited, highly conditional, or non-existent guarantees. With 45 years experience of Asian Art & Antiques with retail premises here in Brighton and a worldwide reputation second to none, we are pleased to offer our customers our guarantee without time limit. A genuine antique is, of course, genuine for all time and not just for seven, fourteen or thirty days and so sellers not offering such a guarantee as ours should possibly be avoided.
